  PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:    V’s

This weekend is the Intervarsity round with ANU and UC playing off in 11 games commencing at 12.15pm through too late in the evening.  This will be a fantastic afternoon with a free barbeque from noon until 3.00pm, face-painting, a best dressed supporter competition as well as an opportunity for our younger members to run on at the start of the Women’s CL1 game and have a quick game of hockey at half time of that game.  We also have the Bunyip Trophy up for grabs over the 3 Capital League games from 12.15pm with the presentation of the trophy at 4.45pm after the CL1 (first grade Women’s game) . It is also a wonderful chance to say thank you to the 3 senior Clubs for their ongoing contribution to making our Club so strong.

Whilst we are still firmly focussed on the conclusion of the 2017 Outdoor season, our thoughts are already turning to Indoor with team nominations being called for and required to be submitted by mid-September.  We will in the coming days be sending out further details in a separate email requesting either individual or team nominations for the Indoor Competitions which will run from October through to March, breaking of course for the school holidays.

We look forward to seeing you all down at the Hockey Centre on Saturday.

Andrew Sutton

For a second year of support, the club would like to advertise a sponsorship opportunity for Andrew Sutton in his quest to run in the Canberra Times Fun Run to raise much needed funds and suicide prevention awareness.

2017 FINALS DRAW HAS BEEN RELEASED…… Head on over to Hockey ACT via this LINK to view how the next few weeks look!!

Each week, you will have the opportunity to read reports from previous weekend games. We ask that you please understand that reports can be written by players of all age groups & level of comprehension/grammar standards. Our job is to enjoy and celebrate the child standing up and publishing a reflection of something as powerful as sport.

U11/1 Boys –Tough game with it 0~0 at half time, going down 1~0 it was our second loss for the season. Boys played really well with plenty of opportunities to score. We are now in second place with 2 games before the finals. Well done boys.
By Decklan.      Best & Fairest went to Mehar & Grill’d Awesome Effort award went to Jacko

U11/2 Boys – Uni Juniors Under 11s turned in their performance of the season last weekend with a 1-1 result against Marist. It took a true team effort and our boys didn’t disappoint. Jakson showed great commitment putting his body on the line, literally, for his team. This was matched by the courage shown by Felix in his relentless defensive efforts, as well as Patrick and Hugo who always had their eyes on the ball and showed great composure.

The result was not possible without the safe keeping of Charlie in goals with some absolutely amazing saves.  Matt complimented this as a defensive giant, gaining many stops against our opposition and Jack ran in like a wrecking ball at the opponents’ attack.  The tireless effort from Edward in creating opportunities for the team paved the way for our Player of the Day, Owen, to score a brilliant goal.  Well done boys!

U11/1 Girls – This week our team held on by their fingernails to secure a well-deserved 1-nil victory over TVWHC. Some excellent linking plays in the first half saw Sophie slot in a nice goal, with a number of shots by some of the other forwards going just wide. The wide passing play was again a great feature of today’s game, as was the increased determination in getting stuck in and not giving up. An individual mention this week go to Josie for again stepping up to help us out. The second half saw TVWHC press us, but stout defence by Pippa, Luka, Ainslie and Indira in halves kept the attackers at bay. This weekend’s victory, providing United beat Central 2 will mean we now sit tied for second place overall in the competition with two weekends remaining in the regular season. Overall excellent effort.
Grill’d Awesome Effort award: This week the award went to our left wing Finlay who put in a tireless performance throughout the game coming oh-so-close to a goal in the second spell. Great work Finlay.

U11/2 Girls – This week we really shone in attack throughout the game, so much so that after the break Coach moved one of our backs into the centre-half position in order to give us more oomph in attack. Portia put in a great effort in goal stopping a number of hard shots at the goal. Saraya, in the end of a great cross field pass slotted our only goal for the game meaning we ended with a well-deserved 1-1 draw. The girls moved the ball well and used their halves to good effect to clear defensively in what was a very quick game.
Grill’d Awesome Effort award: Our award this week went to Aimee Kelk who put in a tireless effort in the forwards and halves, leading the attack out wide and towards the circle. Well done Aimee.

U13/1 Girls – It was a tough game on the weekend for our U13 girls Div. 1 Uni Junior’s team on the 19/8/17. They played against St Patricks, a hard team. Unfortunately they lost 6 nil. But Jess the goalie did exceptionally well at blocking most of the goals and the rest of the team was holding out really well in the first half but it was the second half that it all started going down hill with St. Pats scoring 5 more goals. But all together it was a good game. And it was nice to see most the Uni players getting involved and having fun out there. Good job Uni!

Grill’d Awesome effort award this week goes to Jess our fantastic Goalie who put her body on the line to save some spectacular goals and even in the face of defeat she came out smilie. Great work Jess.

U13/2 Girls – This week Uni Juniors Div 2 played St Patrick’s hockey team at Tuggeranong. The score was 6-0.  We were down four players. Tash won the awesome effort award for great positioning on the field and creating opportunities for her teammates. Ellie did some great saves in goals but we were outnumbered by the other team. Well done Uni Juniors for trying your best and thanks to Ed for coaching this week.

U15/1 Girls – Last Friday it was a hard game against CGGS in freezing conditions as they made strong passes throughout the game. But in the end with a few minutes to go we managed to get past the goalie thanks to a great pass from Mim and we won 1-0. Some parents said Tal was looking a bit stressed before that! Thank you to Dani, Paige and Amy for helping out. We are looking forward to playing our rivals, Norths, this Friday.

By Lauren H          The Grill’d Awesome Effort award went to Lucy this week

U15/2 B Girls – We had a great game on Friday night against TVWHC. We played well and were lucky to come away with a  4-1 win. We still have a few small and simple things to work on at training with Rachel to make sure we make and can win the grand final.
Grill’d Awesome Effort award went to Sophie Linehan for her dedication and commitment to the game after turning up to play after getting home from a week of skiing just 30 minutes before the game started.

Paige Edwards

U18 Girls – DOUBLE HEADER – Our team’s undefeated run came to an end against Goulburn on Saturday going down 2-1.  We were cruelled by injuries to two of our key midfielders Sarah and Olivia with both being carried off within 5 minutes of each other early in the first half.  The team did well to rally to hold Goulburn out until 7 minutes to go.  Best and Fairest was Alanah for another sterling game in goals.

We then backed up immediately to play North Canberra and despite already having played against Goulburn, the girls rallied hard to have a reasonably comfortable 3-0 victory.  Best and fairest was Ashleigh while Madi (2) and Kira were the goalscorers.

The team is still in top of the ladder on goal difference with the last round game against Goulburn to determine the minor premiership.
