PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:
Congratulations to Lauren Hancock and Lauren Yee and Aiden Hellyer and Amaru Ley for their selections in the respective ACT Girls and Boys teams travelling to Perth late September. Commiserations to George Banks and Mehar Johal who have narrowly missed out but are in the train-on squad for the boys.
Thanks to all the parents who helped run the BBQ on Saturday at Willows – it is fantastic to see a few new faces helping out taking the pressure off the Committee.
Finally the Committee will be meeting later this week to discuss amongst other things, the activities leading up to the culmination of the season including the Junior (U11 and above Presentation Night) and the Hin2H End of Season activities. If you have anything you want to raise before the meeting on Thursday evening, can you please contact one of the Committee beforehand?
Andrew Sutton
President
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Graham Carter and family while Graham receives treatment for Lymphoma. We hope you return to full health as soon as possible.

Player Profile:
Welcome to Amelia Bell (U11/1G). Amelia, taking after her mum (a former Old Canberrans hockey player), has come to our club to take up hockey having never played before. Two Wednesday night practices was all Amelia needed to not only get herself through her first game, but to also play with a measure of confidence and commitment, making a number of good tackles and passes. She did so well in her first game that it was hard to credit this was her first outing. We found out that her dad Percy used to play soccer at the Willows playing fields before the artificial turf was installed! Welcome to Amelia and family.

Each week, you will have the opportunity to read reports from previous weekend games. We ask that you please understand that reports can be written by players of all age groups & level of comprehension/grammar standards. Our job is to enjoy and celebrate the child standing up and publishing a reflection of something as powerful as sport.
U11/1 Boys: Despite the wet and cold conditions on Saturday morning, the team played really well and had a convincing 13-0 win against Central. The boys played strongly in Central’s half for much of the game, with some great teamwork and passes out wide that set up for goals by Brayden, Decklan, Cameron, Jacko, Ethan and Makhaya .
The team also defended well, preventing the ball from getting to the D most of the time and Reuben blocking a goal when it did.
Best and fairest went to Jacko & the Grill’d “Awesome Effort” award went to Makhaya.
Thanks to Kirsty and Zeb for all their coaching and support.
~ Angus
U11/2 Boys: I have to start with the sad story of a disappointing defeat to a really strong QBN team – 8-0.
We still put our all in and there and I have faith we are saving our strength for a really strong end to the season!
Finn was rightfully declared player of the match – he played like an Olympian giving us the best chance. Owen was also strong on attack delivering some excellent big hits striding up the field and Hugo was completely tenacious showing us his totally wicked stick skills. We were also lucky to have some brilliant help from Reuben from first division in goals. We may have gone down but it would’ve been a sad story if Matt hadn’t been there to help in defence. Work hard at training and next week we’ll nail it…….. a DAB BOY (Felix)
U11/1 Girls v St Pats: This week our team played their socks off. Strong performances by the halves saw the ball travelling wide and around the oppositions defenders, and two goals each to Sophie and Pippa, and one to Olivia saw the girls run out deserved 5-Nil winners. Luka played a composed and intelligent game distributing the ball well, and Indira had her first chance at backing up Luka in the centre half position when Luka took a break. Julia again had a strong game making timely clearances, so-much-so that this week out goalie, Josie up from Div 2, did not touch the ball once. In the previous game we spoke of the need to be more efficient in clearing our ball out wide and around the opposition, so it was pleasing this weekend to see the girls execute that game plan. Well done.
Grill’d “Awesome Effort” award: With 6 weeks away from hockey, and only arriving back in Australia less than 24hrs earlier, Ainsley Hewitt not only slotted back into the team but also lead a number of strong attacks up the side of the field to put our forwards in a position to take their shots at goal. Ainsley’s effort in this weekend’s game, putting aside the herculean effort of getting herself up and ready for the game, typified the development of the idea that each player plays and important role, which when combined, brings the results. Well done Ainsley.
U11/1 -2 Girls v TVWHC: In the previous game our key focus for this weekends practice and game was the need to run the ball out wide and around the opposition players and clean and strong hits to our player or into contestable space. Wow, did we deliver on that in the first half or what! Sharp passes from the full backs to the halves, then funnelled to the wings put Chloe in a great position where she slotted the first, then a strong cross field pass to Remy saw our second come up before half time. Following the break TVWHC slotted three quick goals, and we spent the rest of the second half trying to emulate our first half performance, however the final score remained 2-3 to TVWHC. Overall the performance of the girls this weekend was pleasing to see and we will be working hard at this weeks practice to continue on with our fine form from the first half of this week’s game.
Grill’d “Awesome Effort” award: One of the key reasons we performed so well in the first half this week came down to the gutsy effort put in by Saraya out on the left wing, who hustled up and down the field on the left wing all game, continually feeding the ball back into the centre forward. Well done Saraya.
15/2 A Girls: On Friday 4th of August, Uni Juniors 15 2 versed the Checks. To support breast cancer and to commemorate the death of Chris McKinan, the whole team wore pink ribbons and other pink accessories such as headbands and pink zinc on the field. We also donated money for breast cancer research prior to the game. The game was held at Tuggeranong from 7:30 to 8:30. Although we lost 5-1, everyone played very well and Zoe scored the goal!
Jasmine was awarded the Grill’d “Awesome Effort” award for her help in scoring the goal.
U15/2 B Girls: Our girls started the first half strong scoring 4 goals against Merici. We lead 4-0. Uni made some amazing breaks down the line and through the middle, we used our press to our advantage and put pressure on them. Merici tried hard to break through our line of defence they managed to do so a few times but were stopped short with Amy tackling. Come second half we scored another goal making it 5-0 to us. It was a very good game, few things we could work on at training but all round good game. Good job girls!
Ash
The Grill’d “Amazing Effort” award this week went to Big Brooke (Kildey) for the look of shock and surprise on her face when she scored her first goal for the season.
U18 Girls:
This was a far tougher match than was expected, although we again dominated both possession and territory with Dara struggling to get out of our half. We struggled to get part Dara’s defence but with 10 minutes to go we broke the deadlock with a stroke followed by a well taken field goal both scored by Madi. Best and fairest were Madi and Abbey. With the bye coming up we have a well-deserved and badly needed weekend off before we take on 2nd placed Goulburn again in a match that if we win will seal the Minor Premiership.
