PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:

A big thank you to Ian, Amy and UC CL2 Men who are stepping up to support the Hin2H program for the remainder of the year. Apparently the session went really well and your assistance was well recognised. Thanks to the 3 Senior Clubs for organising, at short notice the extra help.

For the rest of the Junior Season (U11 – U18 inclusive), we through the generous support of Grill’d and efforts of Tamara, have received vouchers for the “Awesome Effort” from each of the games. This award won’t necessarily go to the B&F but will recognise someone who did something exceptional on or off the field for their team.

We are close to finalising the details of our Junior Presentation Night to be held on Thursday 21 September (more details to follow very shortly if not below) and everyone don’t forget to keep Saturday 26 August for the ANU/UC Club Day at the Hockey Centre, kicking off from noon. More details to follow.

President

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR 2017 DIARY.

The second half of the season will teams hopefully heading towards finals, but we will be having a number of events before we wrap up late September. (please note HACT changes to H2H/Game On schedule):

We have booked the BBQ for a sausage sizzle and we will be encouraging all our members from Hin2H to Under 18s to be involved throughout the day (wearing the UJHC playing uniform if possible).
  • The 2nd Hin2H Carnival which was to be held on 2 September may be changed as it was due to be held then at Willows but there is insufficient field space– we will be in touch once that date and venue has been confirmed
  • The Club will have its Hin2H/Game On Annual Presentations on either 2 or 9 September from 9.00am at Willows (TBC and will be subject to when Hockey ACT hold the Carnival). We will have a couple of kids v parents games, followed by presentations and finally a free sausage sizzle for the kids.

Hockey Juggling – Saturday 5th of August.

What is hockey juggling? Hockey juggling is essentially bouncing a hockey ball on your stick continuously for 30 seconds. This means juggling the ball at a manageable level. When juggling the ball, the ball should not be raised juggled above shoulder level (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSvDGPM7gHg).
Why are we “hockey juggling”? Simply put, we thought it was a great fundraising initiative, and a way to get extend the reach of Chris MacKinnon Memorial Weekend. When: Saturday August 5. Meeting at 3:30pm over by the hill next to the Carter Field.

The actual juggling will take place at Half-Time during the CL1 Women’s United v Central game (at approximately 4:05pm).
Where: The juggling will occur on the Carter Field. To get on to the Carter Field at half time, we will be using the two gates on the northern side of the field (near the old ACTAS Gym and Changerooms).See map below, I have included a dotted line. No one involved in the hockey juggling should be going any closer to the dugouts than the area where the dotted line is on the map (intersection of the D and the Base Line). The reason for the restriction is to ensure both Central and United teams have ample room for their half time chat, but also to increase the visibility of the hockey jugglers (we all know how tough it can be to see the pitch over the dugouts).
To take part in the hockey juggling, all we ask is that you donate a gold coin, and wear a bit (or a lot) of pink. No one is too young or old to take part. It’s open to all members, friends, and anyone in the hockey community!
The website (http://www.hockeyact.org.au/News/chris-mackinnon-memorial-weekend-hockey-juggling  ) has all of the information you need to participate.

U11/1 Boys
Great game on the weekend. Winning 9/1 against St Pats out at a very chilli Willows field. The boys are really developing their skills.
Best and Fairest Decklan and the Grilled “Awesome Effort” award went to Reuben
U11/2 Boys
Uni Juniors played Wests on 22 July. It was an exciting game with some very close calls. The first half had Uni Juniors doing some great passing. Wests had some shots at goals, however Uni’ s defence was strong. Nil all at half time. In the second half Wests scored twice, arguably against the run of play. Uni were clearing the ball up into Wests territory, making for a very suspenseful final quarter when Uni came so close to scoring, but went down 0-2.
Thanks to Coach and team management for their support.
U11/1 Girls
On what was perhaps the coldest morning of the year (especially at 8am) our Div 1 U11 girls came up against a very competitive United side. Surface conditions were such this weekend that a number of the opposition and a few of our players went for a slide on the frosty and slippery surface. Despite going down 6-0, our girls positional play improved throughout the game to the point where just before half time we held United in their circle for three consecutive penalty corners, something no other team has achieved this season, so well done girls. It was also great to see improvements in the way we shifted the ball wide and then up field in an effort relieve pressure on our defence.

Grilled “Awesome Effort” award:
Despite hurting her hand during the week and not being able to hold her hockey stick during the game, Pippa Kates showed great determination to suit up as our goalie this week and take the field making a number of important saves for her team before half time. On a very cold morning with swollen fingers Pippa showed real courage and toughed it out to half time. Well done Pippa.

U11/2 Girls
On a cold and slippery surface our Div 2 U11 girls followed on from where they left off before the break with a really strong game. The nil-all draw did not reflect the manner in which our girls dominated their opposition this week across the entire field. Good use of our wings saw the ball run wide and around their defenders, while great support play and constant calling saw our Div 2 girls take in excess of 6 strong shots at goal, one even crossing between the posts only to be disallowed as the ball did not travel outside the circle during a short corner. Saraya saved all shots at our goal this week and again toughed it out in very cold conditions.

Grilled “Awesome Effort” award:
Our award this week goes to a player who at half time was given feedback from one of the coaching staff and applied that effectively after the break. Maddison Perry’s effort in the second half exemplified what can be achieved by a player who listens to their coach, and puts that into action for the benefit of their team. Well done Maddison.

U15/1 Girls
U15/1’s had a very successful round 9 match against St Pats. Despite the cold evening, we were running hot and started strongly. By half time we managed to be in front on the scoreboard with some great goals from the girls showing solid passing skills and good teamwork. Going into the second half, St Pats was still at nil on the scoreboard as we continued to hit the ball into the back of the net. It was a great team effort by all of the girls, especially considering we had some playing in positions they weren’t use to. At full time the score was an impressive 7-0 in our favour.

Best & Fairest went to Annie Pike.
The Grilled “Awesome Effort” award this week goes to Annie Pike for her lighting goal when she zoomed in, took the ball and hit it through the keeper’s legs!
by Annie P

U15/2 B Girls
Uni Juniors dominated the game and most of the time the ball was in Grammar’s half. The ball went back into to our half a few times in the middle of the first and second half but never went in our goal circle. In the game we got seven short corners but didn’t score any goals from them. Nina scored our only goal in the middle of the first half but we made many more attempts at scoring throughout the game.
~ Laila
U18 Girls
After what seemed to be a very long break between games, the combined Uni Juniors/Central team continued on their undefeated run, thrashing St Pats 7-0 in a dominant and well-constructed team performance. We started strongly and kept up the pace throughout, throwing and letting the ball do the work resulting in many penalty corners and some excellent team goals. Our defence was equally strong, keeping St Pats outside our circle throughout the game.

Scorers were Skye (2), Madi (2), Ashleigh, Abbey, and Sophie.
Best and fairest was Abbey while Alyssa was awarded the Grilled “Awesome Effort” Award for having to play Centre Forward for the first 8 minutes of the game despite never having played there before and without any fuss or bother. Next week finally sees us play our closest rivals Goulburn in the eagerly awaited clash of the top 2 teams.
