PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:

With most of us having a weekend off, it is a good time to reflect on the season to date. With record numbers of around 190 members (not including all players from other Clubs) it was an extremely busy build up to the season, but now we are up and running, it seems all teams are settled and Hook in2 Hockey/Game On is going great guns under the guidance of Donna and her merry band of coaches/helpers.

Having seen quite a few Women’s hockey games over the past few weeks, it is also great to see so many of our juniors playing for our senior clubs ANU and UC. I think it appropriate to congratulate Sarah Haines on being our first player to gain a regular place in Women’s First grade with UC’s CL1 team, but there are a number of others who are close behind in both Clubs as well as those playing across the grades from CL2 to SL4.  It is extremely rewarding for our Club to be actively contributing back to our senior clubs when they have done so much for us.

This weekend sees the traditional Canberra June Long Weekend Carnival for the Under 15s and below. Good luck to all those players (too many to mention) and we hope you have a fantastic time.

To the rest of us enjoy the weekend off and see you back at training the following week (yes we will be training on Monday afternoon/evening 12 June).

Andrew Sutton
President

ACT Senior Schools U16 Team
Congratulations to the following Uni Juniors players who have been selected in the above team to play in the Pacific Schools Games in December in Adelaide.

Clare Bradshaw, Sarah Haines, Alanah Jansen, Olivia Martin & Skye Sutton
We also have Ashling Donnelly and Annie Burgess (yes we still call her as ours!!) as Shadow Players. We have 7 players out of the squad of 19 which a fantastic representation.

Well done to all on their selection.

CLUB ROSTER 2017
Members, as most of you are aware, the Club is involved in running lucrative BBQs over at the Willows grounds throughout the outdoor season. Below is the Age group roster.

It is imperative that you strongly consider putting your hand up to assist. Those who always assist and others who haven’t had the chance previously! The BBq runs out at Willows playing fields (ANU just off Barry Drive) Saturday mornings from 8-12:30pm. Four adults are required to be a the BBQ cooking, taking money, serving & support. No child under the age of 10 should be behind the bbq area and children U15 should not be cooking, they can WORK WITH an adult and take orders/money. A Committee member will set you up with everything you need and be around to support you if in need. Please be in contact with your team manager ASAP and organise the time in which you are offering to assist.

Managers, you need to manage the list of volunteers and be in contact with with either Tamara Linehan or Tracey Burgess as to your progress.
Round 7 – 17 June –  U11s and U18s
Round 11 –5 August – U15 girls
Round 15 – 2 September – U13 and U15 Boys.

Remember, your club fees and other considerations rely on the BBQ’s and we would really like to see as many as possible offering support.  It’s easier than selling chocolates!!

  FUNdraising!!

Uni Juniors Hockey Club have been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill’d – Canberra Centre this June!

“Local Matters” is the Grill’d community donation program that sees each Grill’d restaurant donate $500 back into the community every month. The donation is split between 3 local community groups $300 / $100 / $100.

HOW YOU CAN HELP?
We’d love your support in receiving the highest $300 donation! Simply head to Grill’d – Canberra Centre during June for a burger and pop your Local Matters token in our jar. The group with the most tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation.
It’s a simple (and delicious) way to show your support!

You’ll find our club name on a jar at Grill’d – Canberra Centre.

A HUGE thank you to Tamara Linehan for organising this important FUNdraiser.

  &   #National Hockey Week, June 17-25 2017

Hockey Australia is running two social media campaigns over the course of the week, and it would be great to see as many clubs participate in them as possible.

  • #100YardChallenge – This contest Hockey Australia will conduct on social media. Clubs, hockey players, or anyone can participate and to do so upload a photo/video on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Youtube with the hashtag #100YardChallenge.  The objective is to get a hockey ball from one end of the pitch into the goal at the other end. This can be done by hitting the ball once or multiple times, with one of multiple players. Fastest time wins. The video must be a one-shot style video (video created without any edits and in one single take). Special consolation prize for most creative entry.

Uni Juniors players, we need to put our heads together and come up with a plan of attack!! Have a chat amongst your team mates and chat with your Coach/Manager. When an idea is presented and everyone is keen to participate, please send your idea (email subject reference: Team, Division – #100 Yard Challenge) to Communications@unijuniorshockey.com.au or Webmanager@unijuniorshockey.com.au so we can collate ideas and construct a plan!!

  • The Pride of Hockey – Hockey Australia will launch a social media campaign for you to nominate a person who you think is ‘The Pride of Hockey’ because of the good work they’ve done in hockey, for hockey, or to promote hockey in any way.  Hockey ACT will be looking to nominate several people for the Pride of Hockey, so if you can start thinking about people involved with your club, or people who have been involved with your club who have contributed to hockey please let me know.

Our job is to enjoy and celebrate the child standing up and publishing a reflection of something as powerful as sport.

U11/1 Boys – Report
Great win to finish off the round as we have now played every team in div1.
Thank you Jakson and Matthew from div2 for helping us out this week.
Demonstrating plenty of team work and sportsmanship.
Best and fairest this week – Alex and Mehar.

U11/2 Boys – Report
Uni Juniors played a valiant game against Wests.  Whilst the scoreboard was 5-0 in favour of Wests, the boys took away some valuable lessons.  These include spreading out when the ball is in play, moving quickly down the field to allow for passing, looking out to make sure they give teammates space when intercepting the ball, sticking with an opposition player to intercept passing and the need to continuously move around the field so that they can quickly respond to the change in play. At the far end of the field our goalie this week was Patrick – he was on-top of his game for the entire match defending the goal.

Uni Juniors showed great enthusiasm with attacking the ball on mass which meant there were very few players left to receive the ball.  The boys deliberate passing was great.  However, Wests where able to spread out and intercept, stealing the ball and converting to goals.  The boys enthusiastically chased the ball well and tackled.  Coach Richard is encouraging the team to spread out over the field to maximise the potential of scoring goals.  All in all the boys had a great time and continue to get to know each other week on week.

U11/2 Girls – Report
The girls had a fantastic 4-0 win over Wests on Saturday. Our focus at training this week had been on spreading out more in attack and making longer passes. The improvement in these areas was clearly evident throughout the game and led to some fantastic breaks up the field. Saraya, Pria, Eugenia, Remy and Josie played well up front, while Chloe, Maddi and newcomer Natalia were strong in both attack and defence from the half positions. Aimee made some impressive saves in goals with the ever enthusiastic Gin supporting her as our full back. Special thanks to Indira for kitting up in the goalie gear to help out the Wests team who were short on players this week.
– Sonnie

U13/1 Girls – Report
“We had a great game on the weekend on the Tuggeranong fields. We had a super strong attack and defence and worked really well as a team. Even though we had a lot of players away we managed to win 6-0. Our talking has really improved especially with our backs telling all of the forwards where they needed to be.
A big thanks to Anna and Brooke from the Under 13 div 2 team for filling in”
– Olivia

U13/2 Girls – Report
Saturday saw the combined CGS/ Uni Juniors Team take on the Just Uni Juniors Team. It was a wonderful game to watch and we had our first win for the season!!! Yay.
Eleanor Campbell scored the first goal in the first half and Zara Ford scored the second goal in the second half securing our win against the Uni Juniors team. Congratulations to Eleanor Campbell who won the best and fairest player this week.
Looking forward to the next game and hoping to have lots more goals to come.
– Tara Southwell

U13/1 Boys – Report
It has been a time of darkness, despair and anguish in the U13 Div One Boys’ Team. Trainings have been filled with ritual floggings and the wailing of innocents, sacrifices made to the Gods Of Hockey (who, statistically, would probably be called Andrew). It’s taken us five playing weeks to get our first goal and our first win. Even the half-time oranges tasted sweeter and the after-match feast less likely to instantly cause type 2 diabetes.
Three first half goals felt like a return to form for the Div 2 champions of last year, stick-checking madly thru the knee-high mists from the steaming pitch. Accurate and thoughtful passing and fierce defence (specifically by Alex, George B, Amaru and Patrick) were the keys to what appeared to be a practical dominance over StPats. After their half-time oranges (no doubt laced with performance enhancing drugs) St Pats were resurgent, putting a few shots on goal, nonchalantly rebuffed by Silas The Goalie and the usual champions of our defence. A fourth goal close to the end of the second half sealed our glorious victory. Our goal scorers (AidenH, Meher, Dash and George B) enjoyed the Fruits of Victory (actually, lolly snakes) and the team enjoyed it’s first day in the sunshine.

U15/2 B Girls
A crisp winters evening saw the girls with a good win over Tuggeranong with the final score ending at 2-0. Our defensive line kept it tight and our offensive game was tough with 2 great goals one scored by Abbey and the other was scored by Dani.
After our week off everyone had a great game!

U18 Girls – Report
Another beautiful, warm, sunny morning saw us take on Daramalan and a solid 6-1 win result.  Again the combined team dominated the majority of the play and scored some fantastic team goals with plays transferring through the back to enter on the opposite side of the circle and some excellent finishing.  We did however get a wake-up call in the 2nd half when we conceded our first goal of the season through a penalty corner. Goalscorers were Abbey, Woody (2), Madi (2) and Olivia while Olivia was also the players’ player of the game.
Calling all U18 UNi J’s parents. The bbq on the 17th of June over at the Willows playing fields has been allocated to your team (with support of the U11’s). One of the lowest registration fees in Canberra can be attributed to having Club and Bunnings BBQ’s. Please make contact with your manager with the time that you are able to spare.
