PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:
The season commenced on the weekend with the highlight being the massive turnout at Willows with the Hookin2Hockey/Game On season commencing at the same time as the Under 11 Grading Carnival was held. Willows was pumping with so much activity and we took advantage by volunteering to run the BBQ, resulting in a very busy morning and strong surplus. Well done to all who contributed to the running of the BBQ, especially Tamara who took charge. The Hin2H cohort saw almost 60 children participating and equally pleasing many parent helpers running the “teams, providing our Hin2H co-ordinator Donna with the support she needed.
One area of our game that doesn’t get a lot of recognition is umpiring, and I would like to congratulate Meredythe who has done a fantastic job, pulling together so many umpires and mentors for our every growing number of teams. Well done to all who have also stepped up to umpire regularly or from time to time.
This coming weekend we have the Bunnings BBQ on Sunday, so if you can spare an hour or two to assist, I am sure Tracey, who is coordinating this extremely important fundraiser, would appreciate your support.
All the best for the coming round.
Andrew Sutton
President
BUNNINGS BBQ – 7 May, 2017 –
Fyshwick
“THANK YOU!!” goes out to everyone who has kindly offered assistance at this weekends annual BUNNNGS BBQ out at Fyshwick.
If you were unable to offer assistance, we’d love for you to drive on over to Fyshwick BUNNINGS and say “HI” and buy a sausage!!
U18 Combined Uni/Central Uniform
Fuscia top with Navy skort and White socks!
The Club would like to thank Michael Young and his company Transformed Pty Limited as he has kindly offered to sponsor the combined 18’s team through covering the cost of the new playing strip (top and socks). This is a generous financial guesture and one that should be celebrated through sideline support of the U18’s combined Uni/Central Team.
Joeys and Uni J’s Mentoring programs,
In reference to junior umpires, we ask that our members (“sideline support crew”) continue to be the best around in regard to positive and supportive crowd behaviour. It can be very intimidating for the new comers to umpiring and we need to support their journey.
Let Kids be Kids – ![]()
To all our great Canberra sporting clubs
You might have seen that I recently launched a campaign called Let Kids Be Kids. It’s a simple message for us parents and spectators – that our behaviour at sport affects our kids. So it’s up to us to keep it positive, create good culture around our clubs and call each other out if it ever gets abusive or unfair on the kids.
The campaign sends messages direct from children to their parents – reminding us that kids want to play sport because they love playing with friends, trying their hardest and being active. The last thing we want is for poor sideline behaviour to make kids embarrassed, lose confidence and motivation, to feel threatened or even to drop out of playing sport all together.
As leaders of your sport and recreation organisations/clubs, I ask you to support this initiative and I want to thank the many clubs that already are. To assist, I encourage you to access the Let Kids Be Kids campaign videos, toolkit and case studies viawww.playbytherules.net.au/let-kids-be-kids and see how they can benefit your club. In particular, I encourage you to share the videos with your members and participants. I’d also welcome your views about how this goes down at your clubs and if there are particular areas we need to work on.
By taking positive steps together we can make sure that all athletes, regardless of age, ability, gender, culture or class feel supported and welcomed in our sporting community.
Complaints, Concerns or Compliments!
Hockey ACT have asked that if anyone has any complaints about anything pertaining to hockey arising over a particular weekend, the complaint must be submitted via our Club: president@unijuniorshockey.com.au (not directly with Hockey ACT) ASAP and then we will notify Hockey ACT by 5.00pm the Monday following the incident.
A full written complaint must be submitted to Hockey ACT by CoB of the Wednesday after the incident. Any complaints in the first instance should be sent to president@unijuniorshockey.com.au

Uni Juniors have always had a proud history of player representation and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible out there trialling for a position on the team. If you are successful in being named in the team, shadow player or simply ‘thanked’ for being involved, the exercise of trialling is a crucial stepping stone to your ongoing personal and game development.
Yes there will be tears of happiness and Yes there will be tears of disappointment, the club is simply proud that you have given it your best!
Feel free to approach Jesse from ACT Hockey, Uni J’s State players and/or parents if you would like an insight into the experience. ACT Hockey supply experienced coaching staff, run a professional training program in the lead up to the tournament and ensure the team are well supported by experienced managers.
If there are financial boundaries, please consider having a confidential chat with Sue Watt at ACT Hockey.
( if you own a business, sponsorship of $500 can be claimed for tax purposes – it’s a WIn-Win. Call Sue Watt or Jesse Beeson at ACT Hockey for more information on how you can advertise, sponsor and claim!).
Each week, you will have the opportunity to read reports from previous weekend games. We ask that you please understand that reports can be written by players of all age groups & level of comprehension/grammar standards. Our job is to enjoy and celebrate the child standing up and publishing a reflection of something as powerful as sport.
U11/2 Girls – Report: Saturday was the first time the girls have played on the bigger field so it’s true to say that nerves were running super high. Our first game was up against a very experienced United team. Their quick start and early goals were a bit of shock to our girls but a half time high five and some quick tips about ‘getting in their way’ seemed to buoy confidence. Josie’s close marking shut down the fast attack, every one made some good tackles and Gabby’s defending against (lots of) short corners was terrific. A shout out to eager first time goalie, Virginia, who saved more shots than she let in – pulling out the splits and even a few dives.
The second game against Tuggeranong gave a more equal competition and the girls played really well. They started to gel as a team, focusing on their positioning and not crowding each other. A few goals got passed us but Maddi’s strong tackles made it tough for them. Chloe and Saraya learned to find space on either sideline, giving Uni the chance for a few breakaway plays.
Always good to end on a high, despite every player being exhausted, game three was sensational! Confidence was high and we were able to string together a few sets of passing. Aimee (Francine ) took her job ‘to get to the ball first’ very seriously and made a stack of strong and committed tackles. Play was even across both ends of the field but in the end Central managed two lucky shots in against us. Eugenia, totally new to hockey, found her spark in this game making some great passes to our forward line. The morning nerves were replaced by big smiles!
Although we were unable to score on the day, the improvement I saw in all the girls across the carnival was excellent. Girls, thanks for your sportsmanship and courage, especially after that first tricky game. I was really proud to be your coach for the day and I can’t wait to see how you all blossom in the 2017 season.
U13/2 Girls – Report: First game of the year and it was great to meet Bec our coach and the other girls in the team. We played the other Uni Juniors team and it was neck and neck for most of the game. Milla scored a great team goal in the second half and we won 1-0. Everyone did their very best and it was a great game.

U15/1 Girls – Report: U15/1s had a very competitive first round match against Tuggeranong. We were ahead 1-0 at half time thanks to a great goal from Lauren H. Tuggeranong equalised in the second half and then it was a battle to remain even. Ash did some great saves and Christabel and Elizabeth were strong in defence. The girls ran hard and with no subs did well to finish with a 1-1 draw. Best and fairest went to Annie B with Elizabeth not far behind in second place.
Thanks Catriona
U18 Girls – Report: The Combined Uni/Central commenced the season with a dominant 7-0 win over Daramalan. The first game for the team showed great promise with the Uni Juniors and Central players combining extremely well for their first competitive hit-out. With the three ACT U18 rep players set to rejoin the team in our next game in 2 weeks, the team will be looking to further improve in coming weeks. Best and Fairest being Madi Dooley (Central), Livvy Martin (UJ) and Ashleigh Young (Central) while the goals were shared around Madi (3), Livvy (2), Skye, and Kira.
Best of luck to those travelling with the Canberra Under 18 team competing in the NSW State Championships this coming weekend.
Andrew
