PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:

We are well and truly gearing up for the Outdoor season with plans afoot for: our presence at the Hockey ACT Come n Try Day on 25 February; our Grading Day and AGM on the weekend of 18/19 March (exact day tbc); and the commencement of training on Monday 20 March – more details on some of these below.

Our recruitment as always is important as we look to field girls teams in every age group and division while we make our long-awaited entry into Under 15s for the boys.  It is important that our players ask their friends if they are interested in hockey and if so bring them along to either the Skills Session each Friday or one of the above.  We will do our best to ensure they take up hockey long-term.

CONGRATULATIONS goes out to our very own:

Sarah Haines for making the 2017 U18 State Representative Team.

Annie Burgess, Elizabeth Carter, Alyssa Hancock and Lucy Jalland have been named in the U15 2017 State Representative squad. Final team is to be announced Friday 10 February. GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!

Andrew Sutton

President

Outdoor  Training Schedule 2017:

Training will commence on March 20 for all Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 18s on Watt from 4.30pm – 6.30pm and subsequent weeks from 5.00pm – 7.00pm.

Players: as always, please ensure you are at the filed ready to run on by the nominated start time.

Wearing mouthguards & shin pads is non-negotiable

Parents/Carers: If you are going to leave the Lyneham Hockey Centre at any time whilst your child/ren are training, please ensure you have left your contact details with the Coach or Manager of the team. This is for safety reasons. Please return prior to the end of the session. We do not remain at the centre to care for your child/ren and hold zero responsibility after the nominated completion time.

See you out there for another amazing season of training!!

Friday evening Skillz sessions WILL NOT resume this Friday (10/02/17) due to the predicted heat wave of 40 degrees!

Please feel free to contact Andrew Sutton HERE if you require any further information.

 Come’n Try Days

 9am – 12noon Saturday 25 February

Uni Juniors Hockey Club will be represented by our Committee and a number of our senior players at theHockey Centre all morning as we look to continue growing..

We encourage you all to come along and support your club. Why not bring a friend or two to have a hit?

It is an opportunity for the club to recruit new players & their families and focus on the enjoyment that hockey as a sport and it’s community can bring!

If you are thinking of attending, please wear your Uni Juniors shirt for easy identification and to show true club pride.

Uni Juniors tracksuit pants will available for purchase for $20 in readiness for the winter cold. Please see us at our information table (correct money please and junior sizes only).

The FHE Hockey Shop at Lyneham will be open for expert equipment advice and purchases.

 Nominations for 2017 BBQ Manager

Our Club relies heavily on our Willows BBQ’s to raise funds for our club. Over the years, we have raised funds that have contributed to our club having some of lowest fees in Canberra as well as providing the best equipment for our players.

If you would like to manage the Uni Juniors BBQs at the Willows Playing fields during the 2017 Outdoor Season, please forward your details to Tamara Lineham (Treasurer)  HERE or Tracey Burgess (Comms & Social) HERE .

It will require you to run the very successful annual fundraiser on a roster basis (with other Canberra clubs), develop a parent/carer roster (each Uni J’s team to provide 4hr staffing once per season), purchase food items and communicate finances with the Treasurer.

Ideally, we are looking for a person who would be able to organise themselves and others and to be able to give up 4 hours on a Saturday morning once per month (TBC).

Full training covering club expectations & current ACT Hygeine Laws will be provided to the successful applicant.

Remuneration: You will be paid in full with the pleasure of simply being involved !!

It is a wonderful way to give back to the club and to develop relationships with others in the club.

If you can’t put your hand up to manage, please be at the ready to assist when asked!!

We thank previous BBQ Managers Andrew H,  Raj A, Suzi F and Meredythe C/Tracey  for their service and commitment to the position.

With the outdoor season just around the corner, it’s never too early to buy a new stick or protective wear. Our advice is to speak with  the team at the FHE Hockey Shop located at the TTM Lyneham Hockey Centre.  For opening times, please contact them-

  webiste: HERE

The other alternative is to consider our recent arrangement with REBEL SPORT!

~ SELECT GOODS,

~ MENTION University Juniors hockey Club (it is there, they just have to look)

~ PURCHASE GOODS,

~ CLUB SPENDS ON EQUIPMENT FOR OUR PLAYERS!

With every purchase, a percentage is added to the club’s rebate total. You can purchase clothing, footwear, hats/caps (including sticks, shin guards & mouth guards etc.) and SO much more.

J-Ball: Anyone Can

Are you an existing hockey player who has friends that have always wanted to play, but the season has been too long or expensive, the sport too skilled and daunting? Then get those friends together and form a team!

Never played hockey, but want to give it a go in a fun, social setting? Then get your mates together and form a team!
J-Ball is the new social hockey offering, catering for both experienced hockey hands and those who have never picked up a hockey stick alike!
All you need is yourself and at least 5 others of any hockey experience!

What are the main differences between J-Ball and normal Hockey?
– 6-a-side hockey, broken into 3 zones – attack, midfield, defense
– no goalies
– the field is surrounded by a barrier, so the ball is always in play
– ball must not be raised
– flat stick, you can play left or right handed and use both sides of the stick
– ball unintentionally hits the foot? It’s play on
– 3 x 12 minute period, with 2 minutes between each period

weet-bix-kids-tryathlon  The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is held all around Australia and next Sunday the 12th we are in Canberra at the AIS. Sanitarium runs this non-for profit event to give back to the community and help get Aussie kids more active, build self-esteem and get them outside!

We are still short about 60 volunteers and would appreciate any help we can get.  We do have a fundraising initiative for clubs that if you can provide 10 or more volunteers from a club/church we can donate $27 a head back into that Group.

Volunteers need to be over 15 years old and will be required from 6am – 12:30pm. Volunteers will be doing tasks such as helping kids find their bikes, marshal swim courses and manning hydration stations.  They will receive many goodies on the day and will be provided with breakfast, snacks and BBQ lunch.

The Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is always a really fun morning filled with energy from our famous sporting ambassadors.

Indoor Game Reports

Some of the reports you will have the opportunity to read have been produced by the players themselves. Please understand that they are written with excitement and spelling and grammar may not be their top priority!

Under 14 Indoor

Our U14 Boys kicked off the second half of the indoor season with a 14-2 win over St Pat’s last Friday. Reimer got the lead with a goal in the first few minutes, quickly followed by a goal from Aiden H. Douglas brought the score to 3-0 before St Pat’s took their chances and scored. We saw great defence work from goalkeeper Will, Jay-Jay and Aiden S and two more goals from Reimer before halftime. In the second half there was some good teamwork with Finn doing well in a centre half position. Solid passing led to another 9 goals from Jay-Jay (2), Aiden H (2), Douglas (1) and Reimer (4). One more goal from St Pat’s could not prevent an impressive victory for the Uni Boys.

Under 14/2 Girls Indoor

We played a tough game again St Pats 2 on Friday night. The score was 16 to 3 with Japmann scoring 2 goals and Brooke scoring 1. We didn’t let the score get us down! Eloise who had never been goalie before did an amazing job and made some great saves. There were some nice hits by Sophie, Amy and Ella. Lets hope we can do even better next week!!!

Under 16/1 Indoor

The game against Central was a tough but rewarding game. The girls were slow to score start on both sides with the ball being successfully held back from both of the goals for most of the first half. Ashling successfully held back one ball from the goal net and our brilliant goalkeeper, Ashleigh, deterred many more balls from going into the goals. Eventually the opposition scored and the goals then kept coming from both sides. We finished with a reputable 3 goals set up for success by the players to Ashley and Skye, and the opposition ended up with 4 well deserved goals.

University Juniors Hockey Club is a very proud club and continues to be a financially stable club for you and your child/ren to be associated. As all clubs across any sport do, we are putting a call out for sponsorship.

If you feel you have a business or work for a business that could potentially become a sponsor to the club at any level, please contact the club Treasurer – Tamara Linehan at Treasurer@unijuniorshockey.com.au to discuss your involvement in 2017 and beyond.

We look forward to developing positive relationships.
